US Invasion Of Iraq And Its Controversies




There has been a lot of controversies that surround the decision of US government under George .w. Bush to invade Iraq after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Some people believe that the war was a just course, while others think that it was a planned attempt by the US government to protect their economic interests. This article will highlight the two sides of the argument that have been presented in recent times.

After the terrorist attack on US soil which took place on September 11, 2001, United States of America announced a global war on terrorism especially on alqaida. US security reports pointed out that the alqaida network was the brain behind the terrorist attack, therefore George .w. Bush led government decided to destroy the Alqaida network at all costs.

Afghanistan was the first victim of this war against terrorism and Alqaida network. But the war took another dimension when the US led government decided to go to war against Oil- rich Iraq, even without the full support of all the five members of the UN Security Council. The US government claimed that Iraq was a major threat because it harbored or supported terrorists who could launch further attacks on the US. The US government also pointed out that Saddam Hussein has repeatedly violated UN Security Council resolutions to allow inspectors into Iran. Bush relied on US security reports to declare war on Iraq which suggested that Hussein was acquiring weapons of mass destruction including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.

On March 20, 2003 the Iraq war began with massive bombing of Baghdad, and in December of that year, Saddam was captured alive. The capture of Saddam Hussein did not stop the war, but aggravated it. The US government went as far as installing an American led provisional Authority to rule Iraq until a stooge government was ready.

In May 2007, the leader of Alqaida in Iraq was killed, but instead of getting all their troops out of Iraq, the US government continued allowing their troops to stay in Iraq causing more problems for their citizens. All the US government could say is that their troops will remain in the region until stability is maintained.

People that supported this war, especially those that adore George .w. Bush claim that if Iraq is not stabilized, it could become terrorist breeding ground and a safe place for Osama Bin Laden or another Saddam.

The fact remains that the US troops that invaded Iraq could not provide the weapons they claimed Hussein was acquiring. If the US government actually intended to remove leaders who trample upon the human rights of their citizens, Saddam should not have been the only target as at the time of the invasion. In my own opinion, US invasion of Iraq was based on economic reasons. US government had the oil in Iraq in mind, and that was the reason for carrying out the invasion even without the full support of the UN Security Council.
